Hop on the Hippie Bus
Text and photos by Steve Leroux

If your idea of a great vacation includes no showers for 9 days or digging your own toilet then you're going to love the Green Tortoise Adventure Bus. I know I did.

I first took the Green Tortoise from San Francisco to Seattle in August '96, after my Amazing Bike Trip. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to entrust them with 12 days' worth of my incredibly valuable vacation time. My faith was not misplaced! I was treated to wonderful food, incredible sights, great personalities and an amazing adventure.

Here's the quick summary: On December 4, 1997, at 8:00 in the morning, I left Seattle on the Green Tortoise, bound for San Francisco. About 24 hours later we arrived in the Bay Area, and I spent the day with exploring the city with friends, both old and new. That evening it was back on the bus for 9 days of adventure as we headed south to a remote beach on the Sea of Cortez. Then, back to San Francisco on December 14 for another day of exploring. Finally, on December 15, I caught the northbound Green Tortoise and was back in Seattle the next day.

But that's just the quick summary. There are so many stories to tell. So come with me on the Hippie Bus -- next stop, Baja!

(Well, actually, the stories aren't done yet. But there are lots of pictures in the links below.)
