Day 1: Leaving Seattle
Seattle To Cow Creek, December 4, 1997

"VACATION TIME!

"I'm taking the Green Tortoise down to Baja. The whole vacation should last 12 days. It feels great to be on vacation. As soon as I walked out the door at work, I was so happy."

A friend dropped me off at the bus station and I checked in. As expected, a motley cast of characters was milling around the bus: shaved heads, tattoos, piercings, and even a few normal folk like me. To be honest, I was a bit tentative about the people I'd be travelling with for the next week or so. As a solid yuppie (albeit a reluctant one), my lifestyle would be in marked contrast to the hippies I was expecting to meet. Would the natives accept me into their tribe? Only time would tell.

We finally left around 8:30, a half hour late because we were waiting for a guy named Angus to show up. He didn't make it to the Seattle bus, but I did meet him later.

The bus was mostly empty as we pulled out of Seattle, with maybe ten people on board. Two other passengers were going to Baja: two Canadian sisters named Jen and Becky. Jen was very friendly, and talkative, right from the start. Becky kept more to herself.

The bus was mostly empty as we pulled out of Seattle, with maybe ten people on board. After cruising along for an hour or so, we noticed a rather nasty smell of burning oil filling the bus, so we pulled over along the side of the highway. Something oily was dripping onto the something hot. It was quickly repaired and we were on our way.
