The Traveler's Life: Kauai
Lost in the Garden November 29 to December 5, 1998
I remember my first bike trip fondly. The slowly
unfolding trail, the casual daily ritual, and the warm friendships still make me long for
the open road. This fall, when my brother suggested we take a bike trip together, I only hesitated for
a second.

My hesitation surrounded the destination. He had suggested Hawai'i; I wanted something
with more grit and countered with Cuba. Eventually our moderate genes won out and we began
making plans for a week-long visit to the Garden Isle of Kaua'i.

Kauai appeared to be a great cycling destination: low elevations, convenient camping, and predictable weather. We
researched some of the highlights, including Waimea Canyon and Polihale Beach, but made no specific plans.
When we arrived, we'd go where the wind was take us. And when I finally landed, alone, the wind was indeed blowing...
